Alright, it’s been a couple weeks, so it is time for me to post another review on here. This time, it will be on a fairly new game that I’ve managed to play through a few times. The Resistance franchise hits the PSP with Resistance: Retribution
Set in the months following Resistance: Fall of Man, the story of Retribution follows a former Lieutenant James Grayson, whom has to kill his own brother in a Chimera Conversion Center, goes off to destroy every Conversion Center he can find afterwards, and is saved from Death Row by being recruited by the Maquis Resistance to help fight against the Chimera and re-take Europe.
Gameplay has been altered a bit from the PlayStation 3 Resistance games. Sony’s Bend Studios has turned Retribution into a Third-Person Shooter. The battle system consists of being able to run around levels, pull switches to open doors, and shoot down the bad guys, the Chimera.
The Campaign features 20 Missions and will take roughly 8-12 Hours to complete, which is a pretty nice length for a shooter. Even more time from that you’ll get re-playing the different levels to collect Intel and achieve Skill Points to unlock Artwork, Cutscenes, Audio Tracks, Trailers, and extra Weapons.
The game has auto-targeting and also provides an Auto-Cover specialty, where you will automatically hide whenever you find a wall or platform while not shooting away with your guns.
There isn’t a limit on how many Firearms you can carry at one time, and ammunition is plentiful enough for you to always have some, but limited enough so that you’ll be hunting for it in the midst of the bigger and longer fights of the game.
Multiplayer features both Ad Hoc and Online Play with Modes like Capture the Flag and Deathmatch. The Multiplayer may enthuse some more than Single Player will, for you shooter fans out there. It has a total of 5 Maps, and with Sony’s Launch Tournament going on, there’s a lot of fun to be having if you’re near a Wifi Hotspot.
New in Retribution as well is Infected Mode, where you can infect James Grayson with the Chimeran Virus by connecting your PSP to a PS3 with Resistance 2. Doing this allows you to play a new campaign, use weapons from Resistance 2, Breathe Underwater, and obtain a Regenerating Health Bar, though you have to stay connected to the PS3 to stay in Infected Mode.
Visuals are taken from one of the Syphon Filter engines, most likely Logan’s Shadow, and are utilized well in the game, in the manner of special effects of explosions, details of enemies, players, Environments, and the lighting in certain areas, notably the Paris Catacombs.
Audio has also proven well, having a very fast paced Instrumental themes, well-done Voice Acting, along with an old, dreading Russian tune for the appearances of the Cloven, those Albino Chimera-Relatives.
Overall, Resistance: Retribution is one of the best shooters on the PSP since Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. It provides a nice, lengthy campaign, and offers much re-playability for Multiplayer and unlocking all of the Skill Points and Intel. If you like shooters and own a PSP, this is the game for you.
My Rating: 8.5/10
